Dissolved water in a lubricating oil is comparable to moisture in the air on a humid day - we know the water is there, but because it is dispersed molecule-by-molecule, it is too small to see. For this reason, an oil can contain a significant concentration of dissolved water with no visible indication of its presence.
Density related to water. Unused lubricating oil changes under the use conditions of heat and friction and, if appropriate, exposure to exhaust gases of internal combustion engines. Used lubricating oil or used crankcase oil generally have higher concentrations of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons than unused oils.

In the case of industrial lubricants, large amounts of water are present either as free water or emulsion water because the oil contains demulsibility additives. The droplets of water suspended in oil do not absorb light, but instead scatters it.
Water is the 2nd most destructive contaminant in Oils. Water co-exists with oil in the following states : Dissolved water : is in the form of dispersed molecules throughout the oil like humidity. As temperature drops, the soluble volume also drops. If the temperature drops below the condensation point, some of the dissolved water will become free or emulsified. Viscosity of oil decreases as a ...
A wide variety of lubricants including synthetic hydrocarbons, Polyalphaolefins (POAs), Polyolesters (POEs), diesters, polyalkylene glycols (PAGs) and silicones paired with different styles of oil/water separators lead to an often overlooked aspect of the effectiveness a separation system will have in removing lubricant from the condensate water – one type does not necessarily fit all.
